The Evening of Sponge was part of DEAF04

Nov 2004
20:00 to 22:00
location: Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek, Van Nelleweg 1

Sponge (Sha Xin Wei, Chris Salter, Joel Ryan, Harry Smoak, Yoichiro Serita, Delphine Nain, Maria Cordell) will offer an "Evening with Sponge" -- a public round table discussion and presentation of its current experiment: Membrane, exhibited at DEAF04.

Why should our personal and urban spaces be more mediated or interactive? What makes some responsive systems or environments compelling and others the kiss of death?

Sponge's Membrane installation is a new experiment using calligraphic sound and image to help thicken social space. This evening, Sponge invites the public to a continuing, shared conversation about matter-media, gesture, and performance.

Established in San Francisco in 1997 by Sha Xin Wei, Chris Salter and Laura Farabough, Sponge constructs play events and responsive environments as public experiments from the perspective of performance. Its founders trained in experimental theater, electronic music, mathematics, and social studies of technology. Sponge's work stretches between the areas of performance, installation, scientific research and publication and has been shown internationally at Ars Electronica, Siggraph, V2_, Banff among others.
