Staalplaat Soundsystem was founded in 2000, and has since showing works at several international festivals, museums, galeries and events like Avanto, Mutek, Sonar, Skif, CEMC, DEAF, Transmediale, Ars Electronica, Kunsthalle, Museeum Weserburg, Townhouse Gallery, or the ZKM.

The initiator of Staalplaat Soundsystem, Geert-Jan Hobijn is the founder of the Staalplaat music label and has been the organizer of numerous sound art and performance events in the past, next to being a graphic designer, curator and soundartist. Carsten Stabenow, the other member, is the founder of the German media art Festival Garage and has been curating and organizing many different media- and sound art festivals and events. Third member Carlo Crovato is working as solo artist under the pseudonym plastic-electrics.

Staalplaat (as record label) is a forum for sound artists, an organization network with a music label, an e-zine, a radio program, an audio-gallery, shop, mail order and distribution company, based in Amsterdam and Berlin: http://www.staalplaat.com/

Staalplaat Soundsystem hosted the workshop Made in Taiwan connected to the exhibition ZONE V2_ in MOCA Taipei from August 11 - October 7, 2007.
