STEIM

STEIM = the STudio for Electro-Instrumental Music

Based in Amsterdam, Steim is an independent center for research & development of instruments & tools for performers in the electronic performance arts. Laboratory, workshop, international meeting place, artist hotel, production office, live electroacoustic music, DJ's, VJ's, theater and installation makers, video artists and nomad studio.

The foundation's artistic and technical departments support an international community of performers and musicians, and a growing group of visual artists, to develop unique instruments for their work.

STEIM has always encouraged the use of low-tech solutions and the creative "misuse" of recycled high-tech, for "a human approach to technology." This technology has to be tailored to the individual, and unique instruments are being developed.

At STEIM the intelligence of the body is considered crucial in communicating with the new electronic performance art technologies; which has, therefore, led to the design of extremely physical interfaces and is considered as the pioneering place for the new live electronic concepts.

STEIM nurtures a special line of activity, where children are invited to play with its newly developed instruments. The playful, bright and inventive reactions of these children have often been of decisive importance in the process of creating playable electronic instruments. These include the Crackle Boxes and LiSa, the live sampler.

V2_ has collaborated with STEIM in several projects, as in the performance The Graphic Method Bicycle and has invited artists like Michel WaisviszEdwin van der Heide and Kristina Andersen just to mention a few.
