Arjun Appadurai is the William K. Lanman Professor of International Studies at Yale University. From 1992 to 2002 he taught at the University of Chicago as the Samuel N. Harper Professor, teaching Anthropology and South Asian Languages and Civilizations.

Appadurai was founding director of the Chicago Humanities Institute and is president of Chicago University’s Globalization Project. His research focuses on the relationship between ethnic violence and representations of territories in the modern nation-state. In Modernity at Large: Cultural Dimensions of Globalization (1996), Appadurai introduced new concepts like 'translocality', 'intercontextuality', 'trans-nation', 'post national identity' and 'diasporic public space'. These concepts are important for understanding urbanization and the urban experience under the conditions created by globalization. A more recent work is entitled Fear of small numbers: an essay on the geography of anger (2006).

Appadurai published the following essays with V2_: Minorities and the Production of Daily Peace in Feelings are Always Local (2004); Archive and Aspiration in Information is Alive (2003); and The Right to Participate in the Work of the Imagination in TransUrbanism (2002). He is also part of the V2_ publication The Politics of the Impure (2010).
