In the 1970s, Dr. Groys, who had studied philosophy and mathematics at Leningrad State University, immersed himself in the unofficial cultural scene in Russia’s capitals, coining the term 'Moscow conceptualism'. From 1976-1981, he held a position as a Research Fellow in the Department of Structural and Applied Linguistics at Moscow State University, and in 1981, Dr. Groys emigrated to West Germany, where he earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of Müenster.

Groys teaches Philosophy and Aesthetics at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe, Germany, and is a Global Professor at New York University in the United States. Since 1994, he served as curator and organizer of numerous international art exhibitions and conferences. As artist, Groys develops film and video installations, The Art Judgement Show (2001), Iconoclastic Delights (2002). In 2008, he created an installation of three video-collages combining theoretical texts with film fragments: Thinking in Loop: Three videos on iconoclasm, ritual and immortality (ZKM).

He is best know for his book Gesamtkunstwerk Stalin (The Total Art of Stalin, 1988), a work that introduced Western readers to Russian postmodernist writers, and which coins his style as his writing engages the wildly disparate traditions of French Poststructuralism and Modern Russian philosophy. His philosophical writing includes A Philosopher’s Diary, On the New: A Study of Cultural Economics (1992), and The Invention of Russia (with Ilya Kabakov, 1995); while his contributions to art theory and criticism can be found in Vanishing Point Moscow (1994) and The Art of Installation (1996). His most recent books are Art Power (2008), Ilya Kabakov: The Man Who Flew Into Space from His Apartment (2006). From Under Suspicion: A Phenomenology of the Media (2000), Groys published the excerpted introduction as What Carries the Archive - and for How Long? for V2_'s Information Is Alive (2003).
