Brian Massumi's research spans the fields of art, architecture, political theory, cultural studies and philosophy. He specializes in media theory, post structuralist philosophy and visual culture. Massumi is interested in the relationship between technology, science and humanoria.

His publications include Parables for the Virtual: Movement, Affect, Sensation (2002), Strange Horizon: Buildings, Biograms, and the Body Topologic (1999), A User's Guide to Capitalism and Schizophrenia: Deviations from Deleuze and Guattari (1992) and First and Last Emperors: The Absolute State and the Body of the Despot (1992, with Kenneth Dean).

Massumi is also known for English-language translations of recent French philosophy, including Jean-François Lyotard's The Postmodern Condition (with Geoffrey Bennington), Jacques Attali's Noise and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus. He wrote many essays on cultural science and frequently contributes to Artforum. With V2_, he published the essays The Thinking-Feeling of What Happens (in Interact or Die!, 2007), The Archive of Experience (in Information Is Alive, 2003), Event Horizon (in The Art of the Accident, 1998), and with Lozano-Hemmer Urban Appointment: A Possible Rendezvous with the City (in Making Art of Databases, 2003).

Massumi collaborates with Erin Manning, director of the Sense Lab, a research-creation laboratory affiliated with the Society for Art and Technology. They co-edit a MIT book series: Technologies of Lived Abstraction and are founding members of the editorial collective of the Sense Lab journal INFLeXions: A Journal of Research-Creation.

Massumi teaches in the Communication Sciences Department at the University of Montréal.
