Douwe Draaisma is Professor Theory and History of Psychology at the University of Groningen.

Having studied  psychology and philosophy, Draaisma wrote his dissertation on the metaphorical nature of the language of memory: De Metaforenmachine (Metaphors of Memory, 1995, 2000). Draaisma then looked at autobiographical memory (and the changes that occur to it in life) in his book Why Life Speeds Up As You Get Older: How memory shapes our past (2001), which was shortlisted for the 2005 Aventis Prizes for Science Books’ General Prize. His latest book is on Disturbances of the Mind (2006, 2009), about thirteen scientists who discovered (and named) mental conditions, such as Parkinson, Alzheimer, Korsakov or Asperger. In 2000, Draaisma published The Clockwork of our Mind in V2_'s Machine Times.

The Dutch Institute of Psychologists awarded him the Heymans Prize for his research into the history of psychology.
