The crossing of the boundary of the symbolic, the replacement of the object with practices and acts of communication, enables art to act aesthetically in the social realm, whereas until now it could only act socially in the aesthetic realm. The observation of the world has been replaced by the observation of the communication.

Peter Weibel was born in Odessa. He studied literature, medicine, logics, philosophy and film in Paris and Vienna, and wrote his Doctoral thesis on mathematical logic (modal logic).

Since 1966, Weibel developed conceptual photo-literature as well as audio-actions; he then worked with Valie Export in the field of Expanded Cinema, performance, film and action art. As an interdisciplinarist his work is artistic as much as scientific.

Since 1976, Weibel has lectured at many universities (inter)nationally; he holds a Chair at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna.

As curator, he worked for Neue Galerie, Graz, Ars Electronica, Linz, and he was chief curator of the Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz. From 1989–1994, he was director of the Institut für Neue Medien, Frankfurt, then from 1993-1999 the Austrian commissioner of the Biennale di Venezia. Since 1999, he has been working as chairman and CEO of the ZKM/Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe.

Weibel has co-edited and written numerous influential books, with the ZKM or MIT Press, among which Medium Religion with Boris Groys, 2009; Peter Weibel: The Open Work 1964-1979 with Hans Belting and Bazon Brock, 2008; Buffalo Heads: Media Study, Media Practice, Media Pioneers, 1973-1990 with Woody Vasulka, 2007. With V2_, Peter Weibel published New Space in The Electronic Age in the Book for the Unstable Media, 1992; an Interview in the Book for the Electronic Arts, 2000; and the essay Chronocracy in Machine Times, 2000.
