Ute Meta Bauer is Associate Professor and founding Director of the recently established Program in Art, Culture and Technology (ACT) at MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning, Cambridge/USA where she served as Director of the MIT Visual Arts Program from 2005-2009. Before, she held an appointment at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna as a Professor of Theory and Practice of Contemporary Art (1996-2006).

Educated as an artist and stage designer at the HfbK Hamburg/Germany, Ute Meta Bauer has worked since 1987 as curator of exhibitions and presentations on contemporary art, film, video, and sound, with a focus on transdisciplinary formats. She was a co-curator of Documenta11 (2001-02) in the team of Okwui Enwezor, has been the Artistic Director of the 3rd Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art (2004), and curated the Mobile_Transborder Archive for InSite05, Tijuana /San Diego in 2005.

Bauer has been the founding director of the Office For Contemporary Art Norway (OCA) and was the editor of numerous publications in the field of contemporary art, including: What’s left…What remains? SITAC VI (Mexico City 2009), Education, Information, Entertainment. New Approaches in Higher Artistic Education (Vienna, 2001), META 1-4 (Stuttgart, 1992-94), case (Barcelona, 2001; Porto, 2002), and Verksted # 1-6 (Oslo, 2003-06).

Bauer is an advisor for a number of cultural institutions such as the MIT List Visual Arts Center, the Goethe-Institutes, the CCAA in Kabul/Afghanistan, she is a member of the administrative board of nbk - Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Germany and serves on the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Germany and LABoral Center for the Arts and Industrial Creation in Gijon, Spain.

Bauer joins the collective project apparatjik on special occasions.
