Winy Maas

In 1991, Winy Maas founded together with Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries MVRDV, the Office of Architecture and Urbanism in Rotterdam.

Among the projects MVRDV realized are the television center Villa VPRO (Hilversum, 1997), the elderly housing estate 100 WoZoCos (Amsterdam, 1997), the Dutch Pavillion (Expo Hannover, 2000), the Silodam building (Amsterdam, 2002), Cultural Center (Matsudai, Japan, 2003), the Mirador building (Madrid, 2005), Gemini Residencies (Islands Brygge, 2005), the Gyre Building (Tokyo, 2007), the Logrono Eco-City (Spain, 2008-), the Sky Village (competition Denmark, 2008). Among other projects, MVRDV is working on building flood proof homes in New Orleans, commissioned by the Make it Right Foundation.

The work of MVRDV/Maas has been exhibited internationally, received numerous awards and published widely. The latest award, in 2009, Maas received the AIA Honorary Fellowship for "being one of the most influential architects of his generation".

Winy Maas teaches and lectures at various institutions, and takes part in international juries;
he teaches Architectural Design at the MIT as well as Architecture and Urban Design at the Technical University, Delft. Maas founded, in 2008, and directs the research institute for the future "Why Factory", connected to the Delft School of Design.

Maas published intensively, including FARMAX: Excursions on Density (edited by Winy Maas and Jacob van Rijs with Richard Koek, Rotterdam, 1998), MVRDV at VPRO (Barcelona, 1999), MetaCity/DataTown (Rotterdam, 1999), The Regionmaker (Stuttgart, 2002), Pigcity (Barcelona, 2003), The 3D city (Barcelona, 2003), The 5’city (Barcelona, 2003), NYC2 (Yale, 2003), KM3 (2005), Skycar City (2006). For V2_, he published, in 2003, the essay Art and Theory on Archiving and Retrieving Data in Information is Alive.
