The Gyroscope
"The Gyroscope" (1991) by Just Merit is a mechanical sculpture - a turning, enterable sphere that spat fire.

The Gyroscope was a large turning sphere (3 meters high and 2 meters in diameter) which could be entered by the audience and which intermittently spat fire. It was a combination of movement, light, sound (electro acoustically amplified sounds made by the sphere) and smell (ether which served as fuel). The audience, which could be seated in the rotating sphere, was slowly manipulated and disoriented in the sphere which, at regular intervals, placed the audience in a sea of fire.

Een grote ronddraaiende stalen bol (3 meter hoog en 2 meter in doorsnee) waar je als publiek in kon zitten en die af en toe vuur spoot. Het was een samenspel van beweging, licht (theaterlichten), geluid (electro-akoestisch versterkte geluiden in de bol) en geur (ether die als brandstof diende). De bezoeker, die plaats kon nemen in de roterende bol, werd langzaam bespeeld en gedesoriënteerd in de bol die hem op gezette tijden in een vuurzee plaatste.
