Dziga Vertov: The Man with the Movie Camera

Living Russia was the rather colorless American-release title bestowed upon Dziga Vertov's Chelovek S Kinoapparatom (The Man with the Movie Camera). Essentially an extended experiment, the film follows Vertov around as he photographs his own version of "Soviet Reality." What with the Stalin regime breathing down Vertov's neck, nothing of a downbeat nature is shown on screen, leading some American reviewers to categorize the picture as communist propaganda. Viewed objectively, the film is a delightful, somewhat surrealist excursion through Russia, emphasizing machinery and architecture over people. - Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
