Vocalization

Vocalization is a projected video environment consisting of nine screens and eight audio channels. Images, which come from two sources, are projected on the screens. These images are divided over the nine screens by constantly repeating them. The singer Joan La Barbara made sounds to accompany the images. She also virtually composed the work in the style of real-time performance: images of the Southwest desert landscapes were intercut and combined by her voice pattern while she observed incoming visuals. Steina Vasulka later added speed changes, directional variations, and additional electronic voice processing to the final collage. The end result is a musical and verbal composition, which correlates with a moving mosaic.
