Web of Life
"Web of Life" (2002) is an interdisciplinary project that explores the possibilities of a 'living network' by means of a book, a website and five network installations at various locations. It was conceived by Jeffrey Shaw, Bernd Lintermann and Michael Gleich, and was shown at DEAF03.

Web of Life is an interdisciplinary project that explores the possibilities of a "living network" by means of a book, a website and five network installations at various locations. One of the project’s many branches was presented at the DEAF03 exhibition. In a separate room is a hand scanner against a silver-colored wall with organic patterns on it. When visitors put on a pair of 3D glasses the projection unfolds in the room like a holographic, pulsating honeycomb of images and sounds. By placing their hand on the scanner, visitors activate and structure this web work and become a node in the all-encompassing Web of Life.
Web of Life draws from a database of computer graphics and video images. The spatial illusion is brought about by two projectors displaying the same image on the wall, with a slight "error" in their overlap. Specially developed software then generates movements and patterns live within this kaleidoscopic stream of images. Because the images overlap both visually and thematically, structures are formed that are reminiscent of the neural patterns in the human brain, or that look like a river branching of in different directions. The spatial experience of this installation is enhanced even more by its audio system, whose six channels create a pulsating, three-dimensional environment.
The visitor’s hand lines are scanned into the system and projected on the wall, together with the name of the place where the visitor has ‘logged on’ to the network, e.g. Rotterdam, Karlsruhe or New York. This unique pattern then fuses with the entire complex of connections within the Web of Life network. The visual composition changes, as does the musical web work accompanying the stream of images. A new kaleidoscopic network emerges, where every life line contributes to opening up images and sounds and social issues (the city, cloning, multiculturalism) take central stage.

Web of Life (WOL), following the personal pattern of lines in the hand, organizes images and sounds in an organic network. This installation is part of the umbrella project Web of Life that consists of multiple installations at various locations that are all interconnected by the Internet. The installation will scan DEAF03 visitors’ hand lines and add these to the network of connections in the WOL network. The result is a kaleidoscopic, three-dimensional stereo image, every line of which contributes to opening up other images and sounds; an image where social issues (the city, multi-culturality) take central stage.

Web of Life is een interdisciplinair project dat de mogelijkheden van een "levend netwerk" onderzoekt via een boek, een website en vijf netwerk-installaties op verschillende locaties. Één van de vertakkingen is te zien op de DEAF03-tentoonstelling. In een apart vertrek staat een handscanner waarachter zich op een zilvergekleurde muur organische structuren aftekenen. Zet een bezoeker een 3-D bril op, dan ontvouwt de projectie zich in de ruimte als een holografisch en pulserende honingraat van beelden en geluiden. Door hun hand op de scanner te leggen, activeren en structuren bezoekers dit vlechtwerk en worden ze zelf een knoop in het allesomvattende Web of Life.
Web of Life put uit een database met computer-graphics en videobeelden. De ruimtelijke illusie ontstaat doordat twee projectoren de afbeeldingen met een kleine afwijking over elkaar heen op de muur projecteren. Speciaal ontwikkelde software genereert vervolgens live bewegingen en patronen in deze stereoscopische beeldenstroom. Door de visuele en thematische overlap tussen de beelden ontstaan er structuren, die aan de neuronale banen in de menselijke hersenen doen denken, of aan vertakkingen in de monding van een rivier. De ruimtelijke ervaring van de installatie wordt verrijkt door een audiosysteem met zes kanalen, die een pulserende, driedimensionale geluidsomgeving creëren.
De handlijnen van een bezoeker worden ingescand in het systeem en geprojecteerd op de muur, samen met de plaats waar de bezoeker in het netwerk is "ingelogd", bijvoorbeeld Rotterdam, Karlsruhe of New York. Dit unieke patroon versmelt met het geheel van verbindingslijnen in het Web-of-Life-netwerk. De beeldcompositie verandert, samen met het muzikale vlechtwerk, dat de beeldenstroom begeleidt. Er ontstaat een nieuw caleidoscopisch netwerk, waarin iedere levenslijn bijdraagt aan de ontsluiting van beeld en geluid en waarin maatschappelijke thema"s (stad, klonen, multiculturaliteit) centraal staan.
