Abstracting Hip Hop
Within hip hop there are several ‘schools’. Abstracting Hip Hop means diggin’ into musical hip hop archives, looking for the essence of hip hop beats, flows and rhyhms. Unlike trip hop in the early 1990’s, which merged together used samples into a flow, abstract hip hop tries to reconstruct raw data, taking apart its constituting elements and placing these in a dry and staccato sequence. This is done by literally plowing through stacks of discarded vinyl, searching for pieces that can be used in a new composition. From a historical viewpoint diggin’ can be traced back to those first compilers who, in the early 1980’s, created breaks and beats for hip hop from funk records mostly. Names like Steinski, Grandmaster Flash and Matronix Kool Herc will forever be associated with the origins of diggin’ and cut up variations – the actual cutting and pasting of tapes to create mixes. Technological innovations made sampling a lot easier, thereby elevating the perfect sample, break, beat en flow to the status of true art. To arrive at a sound that was as original as possible diggin’ became a goal in itself and diggers are always looking for new source material.

Binnen de hiphop zijn diverse stromingen te onderscheiden. Abstracting Hip-Hop is het graven – diggin’ – in muzikale hiphoparchieven, op zoek naar de essentie van de hiphopbeats, -flows en -ryhms. Anders dan de triphop van begin jaren negentig, die gebruikte samples samensmeedde tot een vloeiend geheel, werkt de abstracte hiphop aan een reconstructie van ruwe data, waarvan de elementen uit elkaar worden gehaald en sec en staccato achter elkaar geplaatst. Daarbij worden stapels afgedankt vinyl letterlijk plaat na plaat doorgeploegd op zoek naar bruikbare stukken om nieuwe composities mee te maken. Vanuit een historisch perspectief is diggin’ te herleiden tot de eerste compilers die begin jaren tachtig vanuit voornamelijk funkplaten breaks and beats samenstelden voor hiphop. Namen als Steinski, Grandmaster Flash en Matronix Kool Herc zijn tot in de eeuwigheid verbonden aan het ontstaan van diggin’ en varianten op de cut up – het letterlijk knippen en plakken van banden om zo mixen te tot stand te brengen. Door technologische innovaties werd het weliswaar eenvoudiger samples te maken, maar werd de kunde van de perfecte sample, break, beat en flow juist tot kunst verheven. Om aan een zo orgineel mogelijk geluid te komen ging men het diggen tot een doel op zich verheffen en zijn diggers steeds op zoek naar nieuwe bronnen.
