Amplified Body
A performance by Stelarc (AUS), during the opening event of V2_ in Rotterdam.

Stelarc (AU) presented his Amplified Body, a performance/concert with industrial robot, medical devices and virtual reality support. Through tensing and releasing his muscles, Stelarc controls a complete fleet of instruments, ranging from video cameras to industrial welding robots. A large projection screen showed a collage of video images, composed by Stelarc through muscle tension. The project took place in a special location (hall of 30x40 meters, 12 meters high).
The project was made possible through the facilitating support of OTC robots (JP/DE); Space Lab Medical.

In schril contrast met Shimoda koppelde Stelarc een maximum aan prothesen en technologie aan zijn lichaam tijdens deze performance. Stelarc ziet het lichaam niet langer als een locatie voor de psyche en het sociale maar als een structuur die geobserveerd en veranderd kan worden. Het lichaam is volgens hem tot object geworden dat men vormgeeft en verandert. Dat leidt tot het aanpassen en uitbreiden van zijn bestaan: het lichaam als post-evolutionair projectiel dat loskomt van de aarde, los van alle belemmeringen.
