Photography in the Digital Society
A panel discussion at DEAF96 about digital photography.
The digitalization of photography, video, film, radio, television and telephone makes it possible to link these media and apply them in computer networks. This articulation could heighten their impact, but the fact that digital information can be manipulated and is unstable requires a different attitude and approach by both producers and users. So, for photography to remain an instrument of reflection and criticism, photographers seem to be forced to reflect on developments in the digital society. This goes beyond looking at digital photography as a new technique and related issues such as image manipulation and copyright protection. The existence of world wide electronic networks poses questions about socially relevant possibilities and functions of photography within this digital society.
