surface 03, Els Viaene: V2_Black Box
Els Viaene is a sound and visual performer who 'builds' audio media-surfaces which act to cut the traditional links between audience and performer, focusing completely on sound and presence. Her history in sound started as a radiowoman but evolved very soon to a sound artist.

Since the aural landscape has always been her favourite habitat, she started exploring it through field recordings of all kinds in the most different places. Sounds are treated in a very organic way. In her performative installation V2_Black Box, Els Viaene acts to recreate a new room within an existing one by accentuating or making disappear physical boundaries. The audience are given headphones in which live, individual sounds interact with sounds emanating from speakers in a darkened space. These create a new audio space within the existing physical structure - an empty black room, disengaged from our physical sense of space that begins to live on its own.
