Pilot Workshop Watch that Sound

WTS, LantarenVenster and V2_ present a new version of the educational software tool "Watch That Sound". On Friday, September 16, primary school students demonstrate in a pilot workshop how they create their own soundtracks using this unique software tool.

Visitors are welcome to take a look at the pilot workshop at 14:30, followed by a
presentation by the young sound designers at 15:00 and an explanation on the possibilities of the software by Paul M. van Brugge,
composer and teacher at Codarts.

The Watch That Sound
Software has been developed in the past four
years at the V2_Lab. The software enables young sound designers at a very young age to create a real soundtrack for movies or animations
in a fun way. In recent years, workshops were provided
at different schools and at festivals like the
IFFR, Osaka Film Festival and Cinekid.

The Watch That Sound software
is available for downloading along with a few short films. The tool is free and completely open source.

Watch That Sound organized it's own festival in Rotterdam in February 2011, a new edition is planned for 2012.

Dead Drops Master Class with Aram Bartholl

V2_ and Showroom MAMA are teaming up for a Dead Drops master class led by Aram Bartholl. Join us on June 29th!

Coinciding with the exhibition Land Art for a New Generation, which opens at Showroom MAMA on June 17, 2011, artist Aram Bartholl will give a "Dead Drops" master class in Rotterdam on June 29. The master class is a collaboration between MAMA and V2_, and part of an online residency partnership between Showroom Mama and Kunstverein Hamburg. See www.onlineresidency.com.

The term "Dead drops" refers to places where spies leave information behind to be picked up by others; a method often used among spies during the Cold War. In Aram Bartholl's version of the dead drop, USB memory sticks are installed in public locations for anyone to upload or download information. By doing so, an anonymous, offline, peer-to-peer network for the exchange of digital information is created. More information about the project and current Dead Drop locations are available at www.deaddrops.com.

Aram Bartholl (b. Bremen, 1972) studied architecture at Berlin University of the Arts, graduating in 2001 with the final project Bits on Location. His interests include the debates around copyright and developments on the Internet. For several years, he's been collecting impressions related to topics including street art and privacy on his blog. His art concerns the relationship between the digital and the physical and investigates the degree to which the digital is woven into our everyday lives.

Master class

Aram Bartholl will open the master class with a presentation on the Dead Drops project, followed by a discussion with the participants. Subsequently, participants will divide into small groups to make their own Dead Drops, motivating their designs in short presentations. The Dead Drops will then be installed in the public space of Rotterdam.

Interested?

The master class will take place at V2_ (Eendrachtsstraat 10, Rotterdam) on June 29, starting at 10h, and includes a small lunch. The fee for participation is €10. Capacity is limited to the first 20 participants signing up. soundtracks.

Young participants
receive a brief introduction on the importance of sound in film and new

Better City, Better Life

In 3rd I, artists, architects, students and pupils from China and the Netherlands presented their views of the future of their cities. They have built models of their ideal cities and talk about the future in video portraits. They were responding to the motto of the World Expo 2010 currently taking place in Shanghai: “Better City, Better Life”.

Shanghai–Rotterdam

Models of future and imaginary buildings were exhibited in Shanghai. Special robots, equipped with small video cameras, move down the streets between the models.
The DCC has been created specially to showcase Dutch culture in China parallel to the World Expo 2010. Six exhibitions and performances will take place over six months, with an emphasis on collaboration and dialogue between Dutch and Chinese artists. The exhibitions will be organized by various Dutch institutions that have worked regularly with Chinese artists and institutions in recent years. The Netherlands China Arts Foundation expects that work will be able to go into greater depth at the DCC than at the bustling World Expo pavilion.

This workshop, led by Ion Sørvin of N55 and Anne Romme, revolved around intervention as a method of art-architecture-science collaboration. The workshop leaders installed a temporary communal bakery in Rotterdam’s Museumpark, where participants simply baked bread.

During the practical process of baking, the workshop leaders and
participants discussed the necessity of having physical production in
local communities. Participants experienced how working together to
produce food with their own hands fosters a feeling of being part of
the world and ultimately creates a sense of the importance of finding
ways to live that diffuse power as much as possible.

The art container "The World in a Shell" begins its world tour in Rotterdam. Traveling artist Hans Kalliwoda camps out in a container on the property of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) in Rotterdam’s Museumpark. And since technology and architecture coincide in "The World in a Shell," the NAi and V2_ organized a number of activities in and around the container.

Of all the shipping containers that passed through Rotterdam this year, artist Hans Kalliwoda’s The World in a Shell was the most striking. From March 27 through April 18, the traveling artist will camped out in a container on the property of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) in Rotterdam’s Museumpark. But “container” isn’t really the right word – The World in a Shell is a high-tech mobile house that can be converted into a museum, movie theatre or laboratory. In the next five years, the container will carry Hans Kalliwoda to 11 UNESCO world heritage sites scattered across all the continents.

For five years, Hans Kalliwoda and Delft University of Technology worked on the technical development of the shell-shaped container, in which he will have to survive in climates ranging from polar to tropical. Sustainability is a central concern. The World in a Shell generates its own electricity, recycles water, and is generally as self-sufficient as possible. But in the age of globalization, sustainability is also a social and cultural issue. On his around-the-world trip, Hans Kalliwoda will organize cultural activities for and by local populations. He will take the results away with him in the container, amassing an ever-growing worldwide exhibition that will bring different peoples into contact with each other.

The World in a Shell premiered in Rotterdam, thereby starting its journey. Since art, technology and architecture come together In the container, the Netherlands Architecture Institute and V2_Institute for the Unstable Media joined forces to organize a number of activities in and around the container. There were workshops and a seminar on sustainability in art, architecture and science on April 1 at V2_.

DIY Ambient Intelligence was a workshop led by V2_ at Altart in Cluj, Romania

V2_ has been invited to lead a three-day workshop at the AltArt organisation in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

AltArt is an organisation that contributes to the development of digital culture and to consolidating the cultural sector in Romania. V2_ will support AltArt in this mission by introducing Romanian artists with the basic use of sensor and actuator technology in a workshop on DIY Ambient Intelligence.

During the DIY Ambient Intelligence workshop, participants will be introduced to the basic use of sensor and actuator technology by creating their own ambient intelligence environment, an electronic environment that is sensitive and responsive to the presence of people. Most interactive electronic artworks are Ambient Intelligence environments, because they sense and respond to people (using sensors and actuators).

To familiarise the workshop participants with such sensor and actuator technology, they will first each create a low-level sensor-actuator application, learning about basic electronic components and how to solder. After these low-level applications are realised, participants will scale these low-level applications up to an Ambient Intelligent environment, interfacing the low-level applications with modified household appliances.

As the workshop emphasis lies on feasibility for non-technical users, participants will mainly use low-threshold hardware (like Velleman kits and Arduino boards). Furthermore, the software (Python and Pure-Data) to drive the Ambient Intelligent environment with will be made accessible at any level of programming experience.

By constructing such an Ambient Intelligent environment from the bottom up (starting with low-level individual applications), participants will gain hands-on experience with the basic technology underlying interactive electronic artworks.

An international exhibition in MOCA, Taipei with artworks related to the past DEAF themes "Machine Times", "Information is Alive" and "Interact or Die!."

The exhibition presents an international group of artists. Their artworks and installations are related to three major themes of past editions of the Dutch Electronic Art Festival (DEAF): Machine Times, Information is Alive and Interact or Die!

Additionally ZONE_V2_ will present a two-days conference and workshop in which the artists in the exhibition and experts participate. The workshop and conference are intended for students and the emerging creative generation in Taiwan.

Electronic media like video, television, radio, film and the internet are closely intertwined with our understanding of historical time. These time-based media function as a collective memory. Our understanding of history is also closely related to the way we collect, organize and retrieve meaning and knowledge from information stored in archives and databases. But in our digital and networked age, information is not solely a tool to retrospectively look at the past: it has become an essential element for acting and interacting in the present. Nowadays we are living in databases and archives, since all our actions are monitored, stored and interpreted. Databases and archives are used to predict the future behavior of individuals and groups. Interaction tends to become an instrument for economic, social or political agendas, while interaction is basically a richer process leading to often unforeseen results producing social and cultural variation.

In the exhibition ZONE_V2_ international artists critically and playfully reflect these topics, that determine our options for acting and interacting in our contemporary society so much.

Conference and workshop

Concurrently with the exhibition a two-days conference Unstable Media will take place, about critical interaction with popular machinery and the relationship between media art and popular culture. The conference is a concept of Anne Nigten, manager of the V2_Lab.

Invited experts will present concepts and theories. Artists that participate in the exhibition will give demonstrations and talk about their work. In the game, the Media Artist Embedded DIY Kit, developed by Hivenetworks will be used to collect the images, to tag them with a personal evaluation, and to send them back to the V2_ lounge area. There, interaction with the Soft(n) installation will 'read' the affective states of its users, that then determine if and how the collected images are broadcast, by applying the mapping rules between these affective states and the affective tags of the collected images. Events in the ongoing interaction with Soft(n) installation in the lounge area will also be used in messaging to players on the venue, to provide real-time feedback to them as the game advances.

Workshop participants can partake in both the conceptual as well as in the technical development of the game. The conceptual development of the game will consist of designing the rules by which the affective tags and affective states will influence the broadcasting and behavior of the players. The rules should be designed to challenge players of the game to gather and tag images, and to communicate their affective states through the Soft(n) objects to get their images broadcasted in the V2_Lounge. The technical development of the game will consist of going through the basic steps of DIY network building, personalizing the Media Artist Embedded DIY Kit, programming the affective mapping rules, and advancing the communication between the Hive and Soft(n) networks. A demo application that allows basic communication between the two networks, including real-time text messaging and a straightforward mapping of affective tags and states will be delivered as part of the workshop material.

Hivenetworks is an open source project that explores the new concepts of DIY network building, mesh architectures and ubiquitous computing. It aims at taking DIY technology to the point where it becomes accessible to anyone with creative mind and basic knowledge of computing. Hivenetworks has strong affinity with media practitioners looking for new ways of content aggregation and dissimilation and new models of network publishing.

Currently the development phase of Hive entitled DIY toolkit for ubiquitous computing is underway, jointly funded by Arts Council England and SCAN (UK). The Media Artist Embedded DIY Kit is the first practical result of the development phase. It builds on technology that can gather and classify visual and sensory data within a given network, location, or directly from a user. This technology is employed in Hivewares, which are highly mobile networked devices that can be used throughout a large area. In the Hive@Soft(n) workshop, Hivewares in the form of wearable garments will be used to collect images, to tag them with a personal evaluation, and to send the tagged images to the V2_ lounge area. In that area manipulation of the soft objects of the Soft(n) network will determine if and how the collected images are broadcasted over the network and presented on the screens in the lounge area.

Soft(n) network
The Soft(n) network interacts with and between a group of soft objects, physically located in the V2_Lounge. External interaction by users and between the objects is classified according to a set of qualities which are determined by how the soft objects are touched or moved. As a result, emergent group or cluster behaviours form through sound, light and vibration. In the Hive@Soft(n) workshop, the classified interaction qualities are used to manipulate the broadcasting of the images collected and tagged using the Hivewares.

The Hive @ Soft(n) workshop is primarily aimed at people with visualisation skills, programming skills (in Flash, PD, and/or MAX/MSP) and general creative people with an interest in locative media, games, and/or reporting skills.

Hivenetworks - Vladimir Grafov, Alexei Blinov, Will Hall - http://hivenetworks.net

Soft(n) concept: Thecla Schiphorst - http://whisper.surrey.sfu.ca/

V2_ workshop team: Siuli Ko-Pullan, Stock, Simon de Bakker, Rui Guerra, Michiel Kauw-A-Tjoe
