Body in Bits And Pieces, Prototype

The interactive Internet project Body in Bits and Pieces (BIBAP) was initiated by Carolien Hermans and completed with financial support from the Nederlandse Programma Stichting (NPS) and the Stimuleringsfonds voor Nederlandse Omroepproducties and made available online. After an expert meeting organized by V2_ and the subsequent realization of a BIBAP prototype (see 2006 annual report), a complete version of the application was realized by V2_Lab in collaboration with Carolien Hermans’ Amsterdamse DansLab. Together with a related dance film directed by Hermans, the interactive Internet application was made publicly available at www.bibap.nl in October of 2008.

Body in Bits And Pieces, Complete Version

Body in Bits and Pieces (BIBAP) is an online application that entices visitors to the BIBAP website to interact in an exciting virtual environment. User interaction causes a “dance story" to unfold for the visitor through short video fragments. In the development period, between June and September, an online virtual world was created with five different environments for the user to navigate through, each offering different possibilities for interacting with the application. Many of the user interactions (mini-games) contain short film fragments that can be played, made visible, or manipulated (interactive film). Since every user follows a unique route through the different environments and plays with the built-in interactions in his or her own way, each user will see different fragments in a different order, creating his or her own unique story. Whereas various forms of physical action were incorporated in the prototype (through the use of position-tracking webcams and microphones), for the online version a decision was made to limit interaction to possibilities the average Internet user can make use of at home. This version of the BIBAP application also differs from the prototype in that a user can navigate through the different virtual environments to the left and right as well as depthwise. The user therefore has a much stronger feeling of immersion in the virtual world. The premiere of this version of the interactive BIBAP Internet application took place on October 5, 2007, during the Nederlandse Dansdagen in Maastricht.
