Physiognomic Scrutinizer on Tour
Marnix de Nijs’s installation will be on display in the French cities of Creteil, Maubeuge and Lille this spring and summer as part of the traveling exhibition Paranoia, hosted by three major festivals. The work is distributed by V2_Agency.
Dutch artist Marnix de Nijs has been invited to show his Physiognomic Scrutinizer installation, distributed by V2_Agency, as part of the traveling exhibition Paranoia, curated by Charles Carcopino. After a successful opening in Creteil on March 10, at the Maison des Arts, the exhibition will travel further to the cities of Maubeuge and Lille.
Paranoia questions the culture of fear that characterizes contemporary society and imagines unsettling sci-fi futures by presenting a series of artworks that cross the boundaries between scientific research and artistic practice. From apocalyptic future scenarios to genetic manipulation and surveillance technologies, the showcased artists explore the technological fears of contemporary society.
The Physiognomic Scrutinizer serves as a reminder that contemporary surveillance technologies should be viewed with a healthy skepticism. Aided by biometric video analysis software, the interactive installation scrutinizes visitors’ faces and compares them to those in a database of more than 250 well-known people who have committed controversial and infamous acts.
Dates of the exhibition:
The installation will be on display in Creteil at the Maison des Arts during the international EXIT festival (March 10–20), in Maubeuge at the Via festival (March 24–April 3), and in Lille at Lille3000 (April 13–August 14).
The 'Physiognomic Scrutinizer' is produced in collaboration with V2_Lab. V2_Agency coordinates the distribution of the installation.
